Statement
Building with large wet slabs of clay meant I was working at the limit of my control- the piece was at the point of collapse throughout the early stages of making. Working with soft flowing slabs of clay was instinctive and spontaneous, but I also wanted the work to have a strong architectural presence, a sense of weight and mass which alluded to other structures. Painting has an important role to play in this piece, the soft whitish form which is painted on the surface, spreading as it does around the corner of the piece, gives a change of orientation to the work, and plays against the folds and drapes in the clay.
